Being a Mentee with a Business Management Professor from UI at Rumah Perubahan, Jawa Barat
These recent days, I learned quite a lot of things about technology and business: you name it e.g., Blockchain, AI, being a leader in an organization, etc., as I am starting as Rhenald Kasali Mentee — a professor teaching Management & Economics at Universitas Indonesia — in Rumah Perubahan (henceforth: RP).
I am here for about three weeks today and I enjoyed the vibe, and the spirit of never-ending learning. Also, I am seeing some mentees work in a fast-paced environment while others (I am here too ehe) progress a little bit with time. Let’s find out why.
Somehow, it is not what it is. We were actually devised into several departments that I’ll tell you about later on. Again, it’s about habit and experience; habitual activities & previous practices make you work even more effectively. Well, you might say that there is someone out there who works/learns fast as a first-timer. Without being said, s/he is actually a fast learner. They learn fast, then, they adapt fast enough. Or maybe, they have been working in a contextual job description. I’d say, there are backgrounds (gifted or experience, or anything) influencing your effectiveness in maneuvering.
For me, it was challenging to adapt because I have a linguistics background yet strictly academic whereas, here, they need more practical exercises too. I don’t know much about all the things people talk about in RP, but I try to retrieve any information which is new to me. At this moment, I have learned about the fundamental knowledge of leadership in organizations after reading books and journals given by seniors or Prof. Rhenald himself; observing RPs’ Products to increase the sense of belonging, and most importantly, understanding the core values of RP.
We are quite often having discussions during office hours. It raises so many insights which are good for newcomers. As I mentioned earlier, we have an observation too before taking care of “the one true job”, any jobs-to-be-done, and so after, we put up any feedback we’ve found. Seniors will tell the new mentees’ about the necessary or unnecessary actions. Sometimes, I watch Prof. Rhenald’s youtube channel too. Click here should you be curious about it.
I think I’ll tell you a little bit more in case you put an eye to any details, then probably join the team in the following recruitment. The enrollment will be available annually for 22–28 years old. Follow their Instagram to keep you up to date. On the last stage, there is Living the Experience (LTE) phase in which you’ll see the environment of RK Mentee in Rumah Perubahan.
Okay, the organization has 4 segmentations i.e., Production, Social Media, Assistance (or Assistance and Social Media), and Business Development. Should you guys have the interest to learn more than one of these 4 elements, please don’t be worried. We’ll be having them one by one even though there is no fixed time — when should we undertake new roles in upcoming months.
As for now, I am a part of: 1. Social Media: taking care of Prof. Rhenald YouTube channel (pre, peri, and post-production). There is also one person working on Instagram & TikTok; and 2. Assistance: team support for Prof. Rhenald's seminar needs — preparing vital things for the seminar planning checklist; preparing content as his presentation material and necessary stuff e.g., laptops, pointers, handouts, etc.
I better not talking too much details because I couldn’t tell you more specifically. I’ll keep it as a surprise and feel the vibe yourself. It’s fun and has a lovely working environment. Moving from Jogja & Bali, I feel the workflow changes very rapidly. Thus, I have to adapt quite fast and nicely. Also, I’d say, this is really challenging, yet it’s good for my professional career at the same time.
Anyway, I joined the team just about 3 weeks now. Lately, I and others did some research for the next YouTube videos. You know, it’s actually hard to imagine what’s about to go viral or booming. I still need a lot of work to find out the best way to work closely with this fast-paced work style while increasing my sensitivity to predict upcoming trends. Although I came from a Linguistics major and had nothing about economics management & technology, I try to give my best shot.
